Accelerated Reader Lists

What is Accelerated Reader?

AR is a computerized reading management program that Green Hope uses as a supplement for the reading curriculum.  Green Hope Elementary students in grades 2 – 5 use this commercial program from Renaissance Learning in Wisconsin

What book titles are in the customized Green Hope computer program?

Green Hope Elementary staff purchase each computer book title to support the reading program.  First, the book going with the computer program needs to be available in the library media center.  Computer titles, individually selected, represent fiction and nonfiction books on all reading levels and all interests.  Our PTA purchased many of the current computer titles.

 How does it work?

1.      Select a book having a blue dot in the library or from the titles on the AR book list

2.      Read the book.

3.      Take a quiz on the computer to check your comprehension.  Tests are multiple choice featuring 5, 10, or 20 questions.  Each question offers four choices. The computer shows how many questions are answered correctly, shows questions missed along with the correct answer(s), and awards points.

Where can I find an Accelerated Reader list?

Many yellow copies of the list are throughout the library media center.  Each 2nd – 5th grade classroom has a list.  One is also at Eva Perry Library-ask one of the librarians there.

How do I choose a book?

Pick a book that is interesting to you!  Read the blurb of the book.  Ask other students in your class what book(s) they read and liked.  Ask your librarian and/or teacher for suggestions.  You will find shorter and longer fiction books to read.  Many nonfiction books are also on the AR lists.

How many times can I take a quiz on one book?

You can take the quiz only once!  You want to finish your book as soon as possible so you will remember important details from the book.  Once you choose an answer to a question and click on “OK”, you can not change your answer.  You can not skip an answer either.

When and where can I take a quiz?

You take the quiz in your classroom.  Sometimes, with your teacher’s permission, you take a quiz in the library media center.   You and one of your parents can come to the library before or after school so you can take a quiz.  Remember, once you start a quiz, you can not stop.

What is wrong if I get 100% on every quiz?

If you are getting 100% every time you take a quiz, you are taking quizzes on books that are too easy.  You are taking quizzes on the right level books when you average around 85%-92% on the quizzes.  If you are getting below 85%, start choosing AR books that are a little easier.

How many AR quizzes should I take?

You may use the AR program as often as you want.  Sometimes you and your teacher may decide how many quizzes you must take.

How will my parents and I know how I am doing?

You can print out a reading record to take home.  Also, your teacher will get printouts telling how often and how well you are using the program.
